The 44th annual Grammy Awards have come and gone. The only major surprise of the evening was the upset win of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? Soundtrack for Album of the Year. "O Brother" cleaned up by winning four other awards, coming up a draw against Alicia Keys with five wins. The ceremony centered on Brother and the two heavy favorites going in - U2 and Alicia Keys. U2 came out with 4 wins including Record of the Year. Alicia Keys walked away with five wins including Best New Artist and Song of the Year.
Rantitorial: As usual rock was only given lukewarm attention as the spotlight of the night belonged to the numerous R&B, Pop and Rap categories (often featuring the same nominees). It isnt surprising considering that theGrammy Awards were started as a protest by music industry veterans to the advent and popularity of Rock n Roll, which they considered anti-music. Then again while the folks at the RIAA scratch their heads wondering while record sales continue to decline and look for a scapegoat, maybe they should instead focus on just how narrow the music industry has become, especially considering that an album like the O Brother, Where Art Thou? Soundtrack could garner so much attention in the past year because it definitely didnt fit the mold of the expected hit album in the year 2001. Maybe if the industry as whole didnt play so safe, the Grammy Awards could become something interesting to watch, instead of the music industrys version of a high school election, a predictable popularity contest. Things to ponder over the next year.
