The confusion occurred when Britney Spears brought Michael Jackson out on stage to give him a trophy and cake to celebrate his birthday. When Spears introduced the self-proclaimed King of Pop, she mentioned that he was her artist of the millennium. Jackson misunderstood, believing he was receiving the Artist of the Millennium Award and give an acceptance speech where he said in part, "When I was a little boy in Indiana, if someone had told me that one day I would be, as a musician, getting the Artist of the Millennium Award, I wouldn't believe it." Looks like you don't have to worry about that Michael as you didn't get the award!
Jackson had recently been the focus of headlines when he gave a speech where he accused the music industry of being racists. Apparently, Jackson felt the failure of his latest studio album to be a major hit was due to the racist conspiring against him at his record company.
