It has been a busy week for rappers and their lawyers. Here are the highlights of some of the legal moves.
Eminem: Marshall Mathers, who goes by the moniker Eminem, entered a plea of guilty to a charge of carrying a concealed weapon during his arraignment hearing this week in the Malcomb County Circuit Court. The controversial rapper entered the plea in exchange for the Macomb County, Michigan District Attorneys office dropping the second felony charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. Eminem was arrested for this charge after an incident last June 4th outside of a Warren, MI nightclub where witnesses claim that Eminem pistol-whipped a man that he saw kissing his wife, Kim Mathers.
The case is now in the hands of the country probation office. The probation office is to issue a pre-sentence report to the court with a sentence recommendation prior to sentence being handed down when Eminem returns to court on April 10th.
Eminem and his attorney are hoping for probation on the matter since he is a first time offender and part of the plea bargain will allow him to withdrawn his guilty plea prior to sentencing after the Judge in the matter, Judge Anthony Viviano, informs council for Eminem of what sentence he plans to hand down. If that occurs Eminem will head to trial on both charges.
Mathers is also scheduled to go to court
on April 23rd where he faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon and
brandishing a firearm in public. These charges stem from a confrontation
between Eminem and a member of the Insane Clowne Posses inner circle.
DMX: Earl Simmons, better known as DMX, will not be on hand at the Grammy Awards next week. The rapper has been nominated for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Solo Performance, but he wont be able to accept the Grammys in person if he wins, he will be in jail.
DMX plans to surrender to authorities next week in Cheektowaga, N.Y. where he will serve a court mandated 15-day jail sentence for driving without a license. Simmons was arrested in the outskirts of Buffalo last March following a concert performance in area. In May he was sentenced to a 15-day jail term. Last week after Simmons had failed to serve his term by the court deadline, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
Puffy: Testimony was heard this week in the case against rapper, Sean Puffy Combs. Puffys driver Wardell Fenderson took the stand and testified that Combs offered him $50,000 to tell authorities that the gun found in their possession, after they were arrested following a shooting in a New York nightclub, belonged to Fenderson.
According to Fenderson, Combs made the offer following the arrest as they stood inside a Manhattan police precinct office. During his testimony Fenderson also stated that he overheard Combs girlfriend, singer-actress Jennifer Lopez say that rapper Jamal "Shyne" Barrow was the one who fired the gun in the nightclub. Lopez allegedly made this comment as she emerged from the club with Combs and his bodyguard Anthony Jones, following the shooting.
Jamal "Shyne" Barrow is facing attempted murder charges while Combs is facing a charge for gun possession and for the alleged attempted bribery of his driver. Puffys bodyguard Anthony "Wolf" Jones is also facing a gun possession charge.
