The (C)Rock and Rock Hall of Fame may not have had the brains to induct them, but the critics who really count put AC/DC into another Hall of Fame in January. The Thunder from Down Under now have the distinguished honor of being the fifth largest seller of CDs in the U.S.
In January, Elektra Records upgraded sales figures for fourteen AC/DC albums placing their total sales in the US at 63 million according to The Recording Industry Association of America newest certification numbers; this is up from their previous listing of 46.5 million. So it looks like not everyone was buying Eminem and N Sync CDs in 2000, in fact millions were purchasing good old fashioned hard rock n roll!
With the new sales numbers tallied, AC/DC is now the fifth highest certified band in U.S. history. Only the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Eagles have sold more records in America.
"After more than 20 albums, entertaining legions of fans around the world and being certified for sales of more than 63 million records in the U.S. alone, this simply confirms what everyone already knows," said RIAA President and CEO Hilary Rosen. "That AC/DC is one of rock and roll's greatest assets and has truly earned the right to be called legendary."
With the new sales figures in place AC/DCs monster hit Back In Black has sold a total of 19 million copies, that places the 1980 album as the sixth highest certified selling album of all time.
Other AC/DC releases that made the multi-platinum
list include:
"Ballbreaker" (two million)
"For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)"
(four million)
"The Razor's Edge" (four million)
"Who Made Who" (five million)
"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" (six million)
"Highway To Hell" (six million)
"Live" (three million)
"Live -- Collector's Edition" (simultaneously
certified gold, platinum and two times multi-platinum.)
Hitting the Platinum mark:
"Stiff Upper Lip"
"'74 Jail Break"
"Bonfire"
"Flick of the Switch"
"Fly On the Wall."
Last but not least the AC/DC home video "Live at Donnington" also received platinum sales honors.
AC/DC has once again proven that Rock 'n Roll aint noise pollution, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame be damned. While the experts pat them selves on the back at the Waldorf handing out their bogus Hall of Fame awards, North American fans will be able to catch the real Hall of Famers live this spring when AC/DC rolls across the U.S. on the second leg of the North American Stiff Upper Lip Tour with special guest Slash's Snakepit. Which show would you rather see?
