We are sad to report that Joey Ramone lost his battle with lymphatic cancer on Easter Sunday (April 15). The legendary frontman for the 70s punk pioneers The Ramones was 49 years old.
The Ramones made their mark on music with their stripped down style, keep it to the basics approach to song writing, and intense live performances that rarely lasted longer than 20 minutes. They formed in 1974 and released their first album two years later. While they never achieved top 40 success in America, their music became an underground sensation and helped put America on the punk rock map in the mid to late 70s.
The official Ramones website paid tribute to Joey with the following statement:
Our beloved Joey Ramone passed away this afternoon at 2:40 p.m. (EDT) in a hospital in New York City where he was being treated for cancer.
Joey's loving family was at his bedside.
In this moment of pain and sorrow, let us find comfort in the words of the king of punk himself:
Life's a gas, Life's a gas, Life's a gas,
a gas, oh yeah
Life's a gas, Life's a gas, Life's a gas,
a gas, oh yeah
So don't be sad 'cause I'll be there
Don't be sad at all
Joey Ramone
