Singled Out: David Garfield's Go Home
.
Renowned L.A. Jazz musician and musical director David Garfield tells us about his latest track "God Home" which features Kirk Whalum and Paul Jackson Jr. Here is the story: One of the things I have always loved to do is keep the spirit of old school R&B fresh and alive for new generations of listeners. I think this explains my longstanding tradition of creating interesting and sometimes stylistically off the beaten path re-imaginings of songs by legendary soul artists. It had been a few years since I had a Top 10 radio hit with Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," and I thought it would be appropriate to continue in this vein to launch this entire project with the single "Go Home." It's a favorite Stevie Wonder song from "In Square Circle" that's been a staple of my live performances for years. I cut the basic tracks at Capitol Studio B in Hollywood with some of my favorite catsVinnie Colaiuta (Drums), Freddie Washington (bass), Tony Maiden (guitar), & Paul Jackson, Jr. (guitar). We had a lot of fun tracking it and veteran engineer Steve Sykes got great sounds on us and captured the whole vibe live! I also had a lot of fun working with my old friend and keyboard brother, Greg Phillinganes, who played in Stevie's bands in the 70's and 80's. The whole time we were working on this we all enjoyed telling stories and reminiscing over the many decades of recording & touring together and during the Hey-day of music here in LA. I loved 'Go Home' from the first time I heard it, and began performing it live as an instrumental at my gigs at the Baked Potato. It's got a great bassline, keyboard hook and chordal structure, and I thought it would fit in perfectly with my desire to incorporate a Tower of Power style horn sound. I've known the TOP guys for years, and wanted to create a track that paid homage to them. It was so fun to work with them again and we customized some of the horn parts while we were in the studio recording them You can't ask for more than having one of the original TOP guys, "Doc" Kupka, in the horn section! I had never had the chance to record "Go Home" in the studio, and I thought this would be the ideal time. To me, this track was the perfect way to launch this whole ambitious project.
