Singled Out: Melissa Plett's Stay
. ![]() Alt-country star Melissa Plett released her new album "Ghost Town" today (September 1st) and to celebrate we asked her to tell us about the deeply personal album opener called "Stay". Here is the story: After a year of fighting alongside my mother's losing battle with cancer, somewhere along the way we'd put so much focus on her and the family that I stopped playing guitar. I remember walking into my living room after she passed, seeing my guitars hanging on the wall and saying to them, "Remember when I used to play you?" And sadly continuing on trying to convince myself that was a past life... things had changed now. Now I was meant to be a saleswoman that sold phones and services to businesses. Almost a year or so after she passed, now trying to make Montreal, Quebec home, I received an email from an old friend from back on the prairies. In short, he essentially said that that was enough now. It was time for me to write songs and play again. It's like that's all I needed someone to say, or, it was the perfect time to hear it. I'm not totally sure. But as I finished the email, I literally put my computer to the side, picked up my guitar and headed back to my bedroom to write. "Stay" is what poured out of me in the moments that followed... I put it as the first song on the album as it not only feels like the first song of the "new" me, it feels like a way to say "thank you" and give tribute to my mother. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
