Singled Out: Frozen Nation's Dark Belgian Disco
. ![]()
Dark synth-pop act Frozen Nation recently released their debut album "Dark Belgian Disco" and to celebrate we asked them to tell us about the titke track and first single. Here is the story: We had watched this fascinating documentary "The Sound Of Belgium", exploring Belgium's musical history from post WW2 to the end of the 90s; we learned that Belgium was the country with the most important number of record shops per capita, and that, with the New Beat movement, was the most influential country in the world for electronic music between 1987 and 1989. Belgian working class has, since the 60s, always considered night clubs as an opportunity to enjoy and relax but also proud and elegant. So jamming with the arpeggiator of the AN1X Yamaha and Elvis (the modular synthesizer) the result was a nice sequence reminiscent of the New Beat sound. That was the Belgian touch! When our friends from the band Mandales listened to it they called it K2000 (it reminded them the 80's TV show's soundtrack and they are big David Hasselhoff fans). Then we recorded a real, live disco drum and a bass la Cerrone. D found a very catchy melody. That was the disco touch! We invited Astrid B. for backing vocals she made it great. Moss said he didn't like cowbell so D put a cowbell solo in the bridge and now Moss must play cowbell on stage. Finally Moss sang it with his dark voice at a very low tune. That was the Dark touch. We had our anthem : "Dark - Belgian - Disco" Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
