Singled Out: Jeff Scott Soto's Song For Joey
.
Rock icon Jeff Scott Soto released his brand new album "Retribution" today (November 10th) and to celebrate we asked Jeff to tell us about the the track "Song For Joey". Here is the story: Certainly the lightest song on the album as everything else, including the rock ballad, have some grit to them, this song was written for and about my brother Joey who suffered 3 heart attacks in January 2017en route to the hospital, he lost consciousness for over 15 min which led to double brain damage once he was finally treated. Joey is only 14 months older than I am, by all intents and purposes, he is my older brother and boy did he let it be known growing up. As close as we were in age, I was always the little brother following in his footsteps which I did all the way until I finally started singing for Yngwie at 18. I got so much from Joey in terms of confidence, influence and ambition to succeed. We were in bands together from the 1st time I fronted our band at 12 until my late teens, even had a short stint together when I left Yngwie in '85. He is still alive on machines in a vegetable state, my mother spends every day with him the past 9 months, nursing and caring for him at the hospital like a newborn. It kills me to see him in the state, only 52 years old when it happened. Days after he was admitted and I knew I had to get used to never seeing my brother again as I knew him before this dreadful day, I wanted to pen a song that paid tribute to our bond, our brotherhood. But I didn't want something that dwelled on his passing or my loss. Instead I wanted to pay tribute to him the honor of our kinship. I reached out to my dear friend and musical partner Paulo Mendona and asked if he would come up with the music end, based on everything I told him I wanted to say about Joey. In mere days he sent me this song, as you hear it, with beautiful melodies that gave me the inspiration to fill them with words. As this was supposed to be a song for Joey, a song for my family and our closest friends to remember our brotherhood by, I realized more had to hear it. Without my brother, I would not be the artist I am today so I made the decision to include it on Retribution so the rest of the world can too, pay homage to the one single reason I am the artist I became. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
