Singled Out: Jeremy Tuplin's Where The Light Ends
.
Jeremy Tuplin, who has been drawing comparisons to Leonard Cohen, just released his new single "Where The Light Ends" and to celebrate we asked him to tell us a little bit about the new song. Here is the story: The early formation of the songs I write tend to come from either a general theme or idea, or sometimes just a line, which is where this one came from. I was having a conversation with some friends in a pub and one of them asked 'When did the darkness start?' in relation to what we were talking about, which I won't go into. But I clearly felt this was a particularly poignant question at the time, and eventually changed it and worked it into this song's refrain 'Where the light ends and the darkness begins'. I think the question lends itself to a few different ideas - in this song I apply the first verse to space and the concept of light and darkness in the universe, and the second verse to an ending of a love affair. There was a third verse which didn't make it onto the recording which looked at death actually perhaps I thought that was a bit too dark so to speak. The song ends instead with some NASA space transmission dialogue between an astronaut and a lady called Sally, which seemed to fit. So thanks, Sally. And the general recording and production idea centred around the fact that I wanted it to sound kind of space-y, which is where the synth and arpeggiated synth sounds slotted in nicely with the more earthly cellos and bass. I think this was the first song I wrote that combined ideas about the cosmos and scientific imagery which came to be an underlying theme to the songs in the album that I'll be releasing later this year. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself right here!
