Singled Out: Jonezen's Way Up
.
Alternative hip-hop artist Jonezen just released his brand new single "Way Up" featuring Marty James and to celebrate we asked him to tell us about the new track. Here is the story: "Way Up" all started with an idea. I had this concept for big, anthem drums, over a distorted guitar line. This is sort of how all my songs start. I hear something in my head, write it down, and then send it off to a producer. So, that's exactly what I did. I emailed Mart 85 who produced the track and explained what I was hearing via email. He responded and said he'd figure something out. He came back with the beat and I loved it. From there I needed a hook. I knew I wanted a singer who had a Nate Dog vibe, and I can't sing to save my life. I took to Fb, posted something along the lines of, "Who's got the link on a dude who can sing like Nate Dog?" Ironically enough, my DJ (Havoc) hit me up and asked if I had ever heard of Marty James. I had done a song with Marty James years ago and when Havoc mentioned his name, I knew he was the right guy for the job. I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of him on my own. Havoc and Marty go way back so he put me in touch. I sent Marty the track, he came back with the hook, and then I went to town on the verses. Marty did more than he was asked which was super dope, he took the song to another level and did a whole verse. So that second verse in the track where it sounds like Marty and I are going back and forth, was actually a full 16 from Marty. I took what he sent, kept some parts, and then wrote my verse around it to give it that back and forth feel. I ended up writing two versions of the song. The original, which I did over a year ago and then the new version which got released. I was saving the song so I could drop it when I had some other material/an album or EP about to come out, but when I listed back to what I had done I wasn't completely happy with the track, so I rewrote the verses. Personally, I love the record. I've done it live a few times and it always gets the crowd going. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
