Singled Out: The Falling Birds
.
The Falling Birds just released their new single "Anything Worse," which is the first song from their forthcoming EP "What Is There To Talk About?". To celebrate we asked Stephen Artemis to tell us about the track. Here is the story: Anything Worse is a song born out of pure chaotic frustration with pretty much everything around me. I go through periods of either loving the things around me or really detesting them. When I came up with Anything Worse it was the latter of the two. I had this fun, kinda campy, pop chord progression that I was messing around with and I thought that lyrically it would be fun to put a scathing critique of popular culture to it. The song is like when you're talking to someone and you have to smile at them but inside your head all you're thinking about is how badly they annoy you. I know that sometimes I'm a real curmudgeon. I'm ok with that. I can't go down the street without dodging people who are too busy watching movies on their cell phones to avoid walking straight into me. Nobody seems to know anything about politics. People think it's ok to buy food in plastic containers for breakfast, lunch and dinner, then just throw it all away when their done eating. Instagram. Velvet rope entrances. People don't know who Burroughs is and half my generation has to take a prescription to feel ok about their lives. These are all things that make me a curmudgeon. Then I go and break my own rules and realize that I'm a complete hypocrite and that annoys me too. I guess that's life. Dave and I went into the studio to record this song with Brian Speaker (The Femdoms, Jeffrey Lewis) who did an amazing job. By the time Jeff Lipton (Arcade Fire, Dropkick Murphys, Heartless Bastards) finished mastering the track it was one of my favorite songs out of eight or so that we recorded. It's funny how songs will surprise you like that.
