Singled Out: Starbass
. ![]() Starbass, a.k.a. DJ / producer, multi-instrumentalist, and performer Steven Comeau, recently released his new album "Distant Signals" and to celebrate we asked him to tell us about the track "Closer". Here is the story: New years 2015 visiting Canada. I had been raging for three days with my Toronto Burning Man crew. A woman I hadn't seen in three years showed up on the last morning for our daily morning ritual of high test Mimosas. We had dated years ago and overall the relationship was a tumultuous flame out of drama and misery for both of us. I guess because I was so exhausted from no sleep for three days my defenses were down. Because of this we reconnected. We retired to the room where I was staying to sleep. I couldn't sleep due the side effects of the parting. I remember watching her sleep though, how peaceful and beautiful she was. They lyrics of this song came into my head and I wrote them down. I had been working on the basic sketches of the album for a few months prior. I returned to my home in Utah. I live in a 240 sq. foot tiny house modeled after a Victorian train car on a remote ranch. I then proceeded to hole up for 60 days straight and wrote the bulk of the album. It was the depths of winter and the area was mostly inaccessible. It was a wonderful experience. I played versions of the track at different festivals and clubs while I was mixing. It sort of divided people. Some loved the vocals, some hated them. There was very little in between. In the end I included it on the album despite the polar reactions because when I hear it, I remember that morning in a flat a world away where I shared a very special moment with a very special person. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
