Every Little Step, as the title suggests, walks through each step in his life from childhood, through the New Edition. Then it covers his "Don't Be Cruel" solo days and moves into his marriages to Whitney Houston and Alicia Etheredge-Brown. He admits to his many sexual affairs, including liaisons with Janet Jackson and Madonna. He shares details about his drug problems and his encounters with the law. He also insists he was not responsible for Houston's death, claiming she was using cocaine before him and even after his recovery.
