Singled Out: Tender Glue's Hope Street
.
Tender Glue is set to released the brand new album "Steady Light" on August 26th and to celebrate we asked him to tell us about the song "Hope Street". Here is the story: The name of the song came from the street that I work on, Hope Street. Part of what I do is maintain garbage and an example of an everyday task are things like scrubbing chewing gum off the sidewalk. One day when I was home after work, I sat down, started strumming two chords and then the rest just came out. It was one of those moments when you try to write as fast as you think. I thought about how for some people, nothing works out, and how they have to work three times harder than everyone else. There's also another meaning of the song. It was other factors - things were piling up in me and one day everything broke. The song was recorded shortly after writing it. I don't exactly recall how the recordings went, but I think if there was any struggle, I would remember. When I was recording the song, it was just me in my bedroom. I bought this Ebow a while before writing the song just to play around with it and realized that maybe it would fit with the vibe. I wanted to make it sound the best that I could, but in the back of my mind I thought it was just a demo. Then, after thinking about whether to do it professionally or not, I decided not to because I didn't think I could replicate this feeling that I put into the recording again. If I did it again, it would be like I was faking it. It's funny how Hope Street could be portrayed for some people. For me, there was no hope on Hope Street at that point. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the album right here!
