Singled Out: Matt Brown's Walk Into The Light
.
Matt Brown recently released his new studio album "Walk Into The Light" and to celebrate we asked him to tell us the story behind the record's title track. Here is the story: Most of my songs start with a voice-memo recording from my iPhone. I have a plethora of recordings that come at random times. Some come in the middle of the night, some come while driving, and some come in the middle of a conversation. Most of the recordings don't translate into full songs, but I think it's a good habit as a writer to capture any idea that comes to you. I had had this melody recorded in my phone several months prior to pulling it back up and deciding to write on it. I was at a wedding in Bend, Oregon with my best friend and co-writing partner, Ryan Root. We snuck away at the rehearsal dinner party because I wanted to show him some ideas I had recorded with my iPhone. I started playing him that melody and mumbling words that sounded like "Walk Into The Light." Ryan and I write well together and have a way of finishing where the other person leaves off. I think that's when you know you have a good co-write. Ryan started repeating the last word of the chorus and it clicked that we had a good start to a song. It was getting dark, and Bend is full of pine trees. Hence the lyric, "moonlight shining through the pine trees." We started taking in all the romantic aspects around us on that warm summer night. We were both talking about how we have learned that a good relationship is about choice and not an emotion. You have to choose to keep moving forward despite what you will feel emotionally. The song takes you through a story of driving into the night with your partner. When the car breaks down, you keep walking into the night, and eventually you walk into the light and realize you have something that you're willing to keep fighting for. It's also a song about shedding light on who we truly are and being honest with ourselves so we can be honest with the person we love. The song always called for a '60s vibe, so that's how we approached the song in the studio. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
