Eric Church Releases Video For New Song 'Mr. Misunderstood'
. The video cuts between a nerdy teenager sitting in the back of a classroom, and Church, wearing sunglasses and playing guitar, sitting in the very same spot. The teenager is less a younger version of Church than a representation of oddballs everywhere. 'Hey there, weird kid in your high-top shoes / Sitting in the back of the class; I was just like you," Church sings. Listing a range of influences, including Elvis Costello and Jeff Tweedy, Church suggests that listening to non-mainstream music made him "Mr. Misunderstood," influencing the musician he would become while making it difficult to get through those key years where conformity seemed closer to a survival skill. Still, all's well that end's well, as Church and his band teach the teenager how to play guitar and take him along to one of their gigs. It's no surprise, then, when the teenager ends up replacing Church at the end, fronting the band and taking his place in the spotlight. Watch the video here.
