(Radio.com) After months of speculation, the Warner Brothers-produced television series Supergirl has been picked up by CBS (Radio.com's parent company). The show will star Melissa Benoist (of Glee and Whiplash fame) in the title role as Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl.

In the storyline, she escaped Krypton's destruction years ago but has been hiding her superpowers for her entire life on Earth. Now, at age 24, she decides to embrace her powers to become a superhero like her cousin Kal-El, also known as Superman.

The cast also includes former Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant (a Daily Planet reporter in the Superman mythos); Chyler Leigh (Not Another Teen Movie) as Alexandra 'Alex" Danvers; Mehcad Brooks (Desperate Housewives, season 2) as James Olsen (famously Superman's best friend); and David Harewood (Homeland) as Hank Henshaw.

Henshaw is a character that ultimately becomes one of Superman's enemies as the "Cyborg Superman." Weirdly, his character was originally based on Marvel's Reed Richards, a.k.a. the Fantastic Four's Mr. Fantastic. And why is that weird? Because Benoist's Whiplash co-star Miles Teller is playing Reed Richards in this summer's Fantastic Four reboot. Read more here.
