In the film, Streep plays a singer/guitarist who abandons her family for the stage, but has to return home when her daughter (played by Streep's real-life daughter Mamie Gummer) is left at the alter.

When she drops in on their lives, however, she finds she's dealing with anger, resentment and estrangement after checking out of the lives of her kids for so long.
