Engineer Al Schmitt Talks Bob Dylan Album and Strange Studio Request
. (Radio.com) Bob Dylan had a strange request in the studio when he was recording his upcoming album Shadows in the Night. In a recent interview (via Something Else) engineer Al Schmitt discussed the legendary singer/songwriter's session for the record, which took place at Capitol Records' legendary Studio B in Los Angeles. "He didn't want to see mics," the multi-GRAMMY award-winning engineer said. "Except the mic that he was singing on, so all the mics were quite a distance from people [in the band]. It was really� unique. I had to use every bit of my 60 years of experience to try to figure out how to do this, and how to do it the right way. The acoustic bass mic was maybe eight feet from the bass, down and out of the way so he couldn't see it. He could look at the bass player but couldn't see the mic. " Dylan, it seems, was very happy with the results of the sessions: Schmitt said that Dylan told him "I've never heard my voice sound this good before." Read more here.
