Lady Gaga Discusses Tony Bennett Collaboration
. The collection of jazz duets dropped Tuesday and has already risen to #1 on the worldwide iTunes chart. Bennett's been singing the classics for decades, but Gaga is no stranger to the genre either. She's a classically-trained vocalist who's never shied away from stripping down her own auto-tuned dance hit records. Mother Monster is currently on the European leg of her artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball tour, but she found a few spare minutes to call up Carson to explain how working with Bennett has changed her life. How did the idea of 'Cheek To Cheek' come about? I met Tony back at this Robin Hood charity event for the impoverished people in New York and he asked me to do the record with him then. It was before we even did 'Lady Is A Tramp.' And I said yes right away. I was so excited that he was there. It just happened that night that I sang some jazz tunes with my buddies from New York, who are also on the album with us, the Rivington Rebels, I like to call them. And he asked me to do an album with him and it's been fantastic ever since then. It's a match made in heaven. I can't tell you how humbled I am to be doing this with him. How do you describe the special connection between you and Tony Bennett? Well, you know, we're both Italian Americans. He was born Anthony Benedetto and I'm born Stefani Angelina Germanotta, so we have that in common. Also, just our experiences in the music industry. You know, he's a man who always stuck to his guns and I'm the same type of way, so we have a lot of life experiences that are the same and he's been a musical guide for me as much as he's been a life guide. Him believing in me as a jazz singer has meant the world to me because it was sort of this big secret that I have been singing jazz since I was 13 years old and nobody knew and when he heard it, he just came to me right away and he just said, 'We gotta do a record.' I said, 'Let's go! I'm ready!' We have a real spark when we work together. We just love swinging together[laughs]I didn't even get that joke! You guys are dirty! Tony's got a wife and I'm a taken lady too. I love making music with him. He was wonderful to embrace Brian Newman, my trumpet player, who I've been playing with for almost 10 years now. These are the jazz cats in New York City, the young kids that are playing out and about now. They're the New York City jazz scene, so when he embraced them on the album and then they started playing with his cats, they're the best in the biz the past 50 years, you know, it just kind of became something else. It's been incredible and he's a real, real icon. A real legend and I think what that's about is allowing music to evolve forward and what he wanted to do was bring this new generation of jazz music, composers and melodies from over 80 years ago. This was our goal and I wanted to do everything I could to be as authentic and honest as I could on these records. And he wanted people to hear my real singing voice because mostly on the radio, everything up until this point, it's been very auto-tuned or I've been making mostly dance music.
