(Radio.com) Chris Brown maintained his innocence in one of two court cases the singer is currently embattled in. Faced with misdemeanor simple assault charges stemming from an incident where he and his bodyguard Christopher Hollosy are accused of beating up a male fan, Brown turned down a plea offered by the prosecution today (January 8) at court in Washington, D.C.

"We reject that offer," said Danny Onorato, of Brown's attorneys, during the 10-minute hearing. Brown and Hollosy declined to comment after the hearing. Each face a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

As SPIN points out, the Washington Post described the hearing as "a frenzied scene," with over a dozen U.S. Marshals standing guard, wearing full fatigues and carrying assault rifles.

The details of the incident on the docket, according to CBS DC, included Brown breaking the defendant's nose outside of the W Hotel when a he tried to get a picture of the singer. In the report, Parker Isaac Adams, 20, said Brown told him, "I'm not down with that gay s***," and, "I feel like boxing." Brown and his bodyguard went on to allegedly hit the man. more on this story
