Pins and Needles began as almost an R&B song with no guitars or acoustic drums. As with most of our better material, it basically wrote itself in a matter of a couple hours.

I (Joel) had the basic lyrical concept and melody already in my head and just laid down some keys and drum samples to get the idea fleshed out. It wasn't until a few months later that I transcribed the guitar parts and Christian wrote the squealy guitar layers over the top.

I've heard of a lot of players who get some of their best ideas from playing other instruments. This was definitely one of those cases.
