Singled Out: The Easy Reasons' Piece
. I always liked 70's rock. The big full sound, the energy, the dirty thick guitars, so I came up with this lick. I had been trying to branch out of the more traditional 3 chord progression thing when song writing...and Piece was born. The lyrics are a part of a moment in your life when you meet someone and they are pure. They are beautiful, despite their imperfections or society's standards and you want them for it. You want to write songs about the way they make you feel. You want them to love you and you want to love them back, in that moment it can't be contained so it drives you. It drives you to break hearts or block things out and you just see them in the purest of light. I am nothing without love, so I just want a piece, cause without it I am empty. Even if you can't be mine, you are good, and I just want a piece... One night we went into rehearsal and I just started jamming on the riff. The rest was totally organic. From there the band came in and completed the vision of the song. All full and driving. The fuzz from Pete's guitar, the tribal nature of Will's drum parts, Lisa's bass driving it along. We worked with it a bunch in practice, just really jamming out on it going crazy. We loosely nailed down a structure and it was into the studio to track it live from there. We wanted it to feel like it was from the 70's so we recorded it that way with all of us playing in the room together. Live tracking was a whole new thing for me, but I think it really lent itself to the serve the song better than overdubbing would have, so I am completely happy with that choice. When I picture this song, I picture lovers running in the woods after each other on an epic game of chase, hoping in the end they find one another or that sense of peace that one only feels when you found someone who loves you. It is amazing where a moment of time can drive you. With a song you can capture it...your feelings may change, what is hip may change but the song remains the same and lives on forever, like a memorial to all the wonderful moments in life. You may not have it all, but you can have a Piece. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the band right here!
