Leslie West Reclaims Classic Song

(Classic Rock) Leslie West has revealed he re-recorded his classic track Long Red in order to reclaim ownership of the music. When he originally laid it down on his 1969 solo debut Mountain, he could never have imagined it would become one of the most-sampled pieces in the hip-hop era.

But that's what happened. And in the Spotify playlist here, starting with his new version, West is able to list more than 20 tracks that it's been used on, including material released by Jay-Z, Public Enemy De La Soul, The Game, ASAP Rocky and many others including Depeche Mode.

The Mountain guitarist says: "In 1969, when I wrote the song, there was no hip-hop." He adds: "It was time for me to let people hear that song the way I do it now. I used a [Hammond] B-3 organ on it again, but this time it has a lot more balls."

His new version of Long Red appears on Still Climbing, which was released on October 29 via Provogue Records and includes guest appearances by Mark Tremonti, Jonny Lang, Dee Snider and Johnny Winter. more on this story
