ABC announced on Sunday night that Barbara Walters, the leading voice on The View, will be retiring next year after spending 37 years with ABC News.

Walters will make her formal announcement on this morning's episode of "The View" (May 13th), according to TMZ. She plans to continue on The View and her various other news projects through next summer.

Walters says in a statement, "I am very happy with my decision and look forward to a wonderful and special year ahead both on 'The View' and with ABC News."

She added, "I created 'The View' and am delighted it will last beyond my leaving it."
