Singled Out: Jason Blum
. I was in Santa Fe New Mexico for a couple of months taking a retreat from New York City when I returned I met up with a songwriter friend, Jason Darling and his girlfriend, Josephine for coffee at her apartment. They had began dating a year before on the heals of big break up for Darling. In the wake of the ten year relationship's abrupt ending he wrote a big batch of beautiful songs that were mournful in tone and probably not what a new lover wants to hear every day. Josephine started applying pressure for him to write a song for her. A nice song celebrating their new love and happiness. He said, "It doesn't work that way, Josephine." So she waited and then she started asking me She knew if I wrote one for her, he would turn feel compelled to write one for her and she would get her song. I told her "It doesn't work that way, Josephine" and did not write her one either So getting back to our coffee date We got out the guitars to play our new songs for each other and Josephine asks me "Hey Jay, did you write me my song yet?" I replied "No" but feeling up to a challenge, "I'll write you one right now how about that?" So I started the chord progression and noticed she was actually trying to untangle a silver chain knotted around a small pendant heart so that became my opening line I made up some more words and we had a laugh. "The melody's drift through the window pane" were actually sirens on the street blaring over our sing song session It was a warm winter day almost spring like, so the windows were open. On my way home I really liked the melody and first few lines. I kept working on it on the subway ride back to Brooklyn. By the time I got home I had the entire thing worked out and started making a demo of it immediately in my apartment. In the song and at the time, Josephine was wondering and perhaps doubting the future of this relationship. I had a feeling it might work out for them and she should hang in there. Turns out I was right, and today they are engaged to be married. I'd also like to add that he has since written a bunch of songs about his love for her. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the album right here!
