. Led by guitarist-singer J Mascis, the trio formed in the mid '80s and rose to prominence as a favorite of such peers as Sonic Youth, Nirvana and Iggy Pop. The band is sometimes credited with restoring lead guitar to indie rock--a reputation well-earned, given Mascis's penchant for flavoring his songs with shards of guitar noise and shrieking feedback.
