Singled Out: The Kickdrums' Thieves
. 'Thieves' came together as a beat first. It was a bit complicated because I wanted to combined samples from two different songs. Pisces - Dear One & Pisces - Elephant Eyes. I knew the two would work together but it took a few days to get it to mesh right. I had to add a lot of original layers and tempo match without distorting them or anything. Those samples make up the verse section of the track. Once I had it sounding good I started working out the vocal melody and came up with it pretty fast. I wanted to get that Beatles "Leslie Speaker" effect on my voice so I used a Option 5 rotation pedal that I use on stage for guitar. My lyrics are about the pressures you put on yourself as an artist and sometimes wanting to run away from it all. Then the chorus is about letting those fears go to be able to reach your potential. The chorus (beat-wise) is original. I wanted to use an acoustic guitar at some point on the album and it worked well for this song. I had my friend Anna Yvette sing the choir like vocals on the hook telling her to think "Dark Side of the Moon". Once the track was wrapped up on my end we sent a version over to Casey Veggies to hop on and he killed it! The rest is history! Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen and download the full album right here!
