The two albums represent the final two pieces of the Devin Townsend Project, a quartet of albums that began with the ambient, restrained Ki and continued with Addicted!, a heavy and rhythm-driven album. Deconstruction is Townsend's heaviest work since his former band Strapping Young Lad, and includes symphonic elements combined with extreme metal.
