Singled Out: Sander Kleinenberg's Follow Me
. "Follow Me" is a funky little jam that was carefully constructed around a vocal I recorded in one of the original sessions for the album. I rented a studio in Amsterdam and filled it with amazing old synths and classic vintage tube things. I spent a few weeks in there playing and fooling around with everything and told myself I could only spend 2 hours on an idea and then had to move on. Basically this resulted in an entire of library of sounds and ideas. I came across the Roland VP 330, a classic disco era type vocoder with amazing strings, (also featured on this album in "Closer") and after plugging it in created the vocoder effects. A little too obsessed with Twitter, I started recording the words "Follow Me" as a plea to get more followers (much to the amusement of some friends in the studio). The heavy funk stabs are a sound from my youth as well as the influence of break-dance movies of the mid eighties ('CRAZY LEGS'!). At the end of the track, you can hear an old sample recorded at a Northern Soul gig in the 70's somewhere in the North of England that was used by Kelvin Andrews (Robbie Williams producer) on a house record in the early 2000's. I reached out to him and asked if he would mind if I used it because the content of the words is so incredibly spot on. He said it wasn't a problem but could not help me trace the actual man or band that recorded it. With that being said, I actually owe someone some credit here. I, however, vow here to support a musical charity with the proceeds if I can't find the original writer/performer. Hearing is believing.
