Hard Bargain features 11 original Harris songs. Harris wrote "Darlin' Kate" in tribute to her friend, the late singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle. She also remembers her relationship with country rock legend Gram Parsons in "The Road" saying: "I really just told that story the way I see it in my mind, the brief time we had and how I couldn't imagine that Gram wouldn't be around forever.
