Mel McDaniel RIP
. The Checotah, Oklahoma native had been in poor health for a number of years, having taken a near-fatal stage fall in 1996 and having suffered a heart attack in 2009. The husky-voiced singer was undergoing treatment for cancer at the time of his death. McDaniel got his start singing for oil-field workers in Anchorage, Alaska. He came to Nashville in the mid-'70s and had his first hit in 1981 with "Louisiana Saturday Night." He recorded "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On," which would be his biggest hit, after both Conway Twitty and John Anderson passed on the track. more on this story Gibson.com is an official news provider for the Day in Rock.
