Singled Out: Katie Costello's Cityscapes
. Cityscapes was inspired whilst in a unexpectedly long car journey from New York City to Philadelphia, which as it turns out was a wonderfully fruitful use of time, despite my initial judgment. I was on my way to an NPR recording with a good musician friend of mine, Dave Eggar, who was on verge of releasing a new record. During the car ride, I discovered that four of my existing songs fit together in a nice little thematic package. I thought to myself, I need to make an EP! The four songs seemed to chronicle the last year of my life, and most significantly my move from Los Angeles to New York City, and my search for the feeling of "home." Watching the New York skyline disappear (even while knowing I would see it in a few short hours) made my heart sink. It signaled to me that I had really found my home (a place with which I genuinely connected), and that was a very momentous feeling. When I returned that evening, the cityscape, if you will, had never looked brighter, crazier, and more full of insane energy. I wrote Cityscapes the following morning, knowing for certain that it would bring the EP into the cohesive storyboard that I had envisioned. Cityscapes is about any city or place that has challenged you or made you a better person. For me in particular it's about New York City and Los Angeles. Both cities make my mind race and my heart race. They make me work hard and play hard and be exactly who I am. New York gave me a personal freedom with which I am forever grateful. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album (be sure to look for the link to the free download of this song) and more - right here!
