Singled Out: Skittish
. The song "Love Songs and Lullabyes" was written in October of last year when I was in the depths of my scary movie marathons. I wanted a love song from the perspective of someone whose feeling the same kind of love every 'normal' person does, but just expresses it in a different way. I tend to feel for the lonely serial killers and monsters who usually smother that which they love. Thus the lyrics about wanting to "brick you up in my basement." That's the character's way of keeping their love safe and secure, it's just a little messed up. Which leads into the lyrics of "don't feed me no love songs, don't feed me no lullabyes now." Which essentially is saying that there is no 'right' way to love someone or something. The fact that you do it at all is good enough. Recording this song was a bit of a hassle because of the time changes. We went back and forth with this song trying to decide if it should be in 3/4 or 4/4...eventually we just did both. The main, low, hit going throughout the song is me hitting my clothes dryer (which was in the basement next to my recording set up), and the metallic clicks and clonks are the sounds of me locking and unlocking my studio deadbolt. Lastly, we filled out the mandolin solo part with us banging on trash cans. Every Celtic flavored folk/rock song needs some trash cans! Hearing is believing.
