Jagged Little Alanis Morissette Anniversary

10/07/2010
.
On this date in 1995, Alanis Morissette went to No 1 on the U.S. album chart with Jagged Little Pill. The album went on to become one of the biggest-selling albums ever by a female artist with worldwide sales over 33 million. Gibson takes a look back.

The road to superstardom began with the singer's move from Ottawa to Toronto, following her high school graduation in 1993. After a visit to Nashville proved fruitless, she began visiting Los Angeles, where she met musician Glen Ballard. They formed an instant musical bond and quickly began writing and recording songs in Ballard's studio. Some songs that would end up on Morissette's Jagged Little Pill album, such as "Perfect," were written and recorded in less than 20 minutes.

During one of her stays in L.A., Alanis was mugged at gunpoint. Because of the experience, she began having daily panic attacks. Ballard encouraged her to deal with her angry and upset feelings through her songs. Morissette later said that her collaborator was the first person who had encouraged her to put herself in her music. Anyone who heard "You Oughta Know" could certainly hear that the singer had put every ounce of herself into the anger of that song. - more on this story
