So I Ate Myself, Bite by Bite
. With So I Ate Myself, Bite by Bite, Dreamend diverges from the synth-pop of Black Moth to take on unified nightmarish folk songs that chronicle the events in the life of a serial killer. In one of the album's standout tracks, the sing-a-long, banjo driven "Magnesium Light," the narrative finds the killer in a positive mental space, proving that through the lens of Dreamend, even the darkest subject matter can sound bright. "To me, music, artwork, packaging and assembling are all equal parts in the creation of a cohesive album," says Ryan Graveface, Dreamend's frontman and proprietor of Graveface Records, whose roster includes The Appleseed Cast, Kid Dakota, and Monster Movie among others. Graveface believes an album isn't complete without distinctive custom artwork and the unique personal touch of on-site assembly, which frequently entails time consuming, literal cutting and pasting, e.g., the pop-up book packaging from Dreamend's last album The Long Forgotten Friend (2008/Graveface). Upping the ante, the LP version of SIAMBbB is presented like a phenakistoscope, a classic Victorian animation machine. Look for Dreamend on tour this August, followed by a four week opening stint for Tobacco, who helped curate So I Ate Myself, Bite by Bite and its companion piece, which will be out in early 2011.
