Singled Out: Gypsyhawk (Ex-Skeletonwitch)
. I remember writing all of the song 'Gypsyhawk' back in the dead of winter when I lived in Athens, Ohio. It was all done on a four track and I was waiting so long to be able to play it. It wasn't until almost a year-and-a-half later that I had the opportunity to put it together with a band, but the original intention carried a 'black and roll' kind of feel, then I realized, "f*** all that noise, I love the early classic rock sound." So with some minor adjustments, we got the tune nailed down to where it's at now. The song title came along with the band name (obviously), but me and my buddy, Greg, were high as s*** one day talking about cool band namespartly because I needed a band name and his band was in the process of changing their name. Then, all of a sudden, I pretty much chalk this one up to collective consciousness, I was like, 'Gypsyhawk,' then when the weed smoke cleared enough for me to see Greg's face, he was like, "Yeah, that's rad." Then the name just stuck. Almost everyone that heard the name after that was super stoked on it, so I felt like I made ONE right decision. The song "Gypsyhawk" was titled that originally because I had no idea what to call the song or what I was going to write about. It slowly came to me: the lyrics are all about my experiences living in and leaving places without being tied down, kind of like a roamin' gypsy vibeA troubadour. During my childhood in Louisiana, I was always moving -- from Abbeville to Youngsville to Lafayette to Opelousas, even to Fort Worth, Texas. And then in my 19th year, I moved to Ohio. I started out living in Columbus, then Athens, to Cleveland and finally Nelsonville before unexpectedly relocating to Los Angeles. So, I figured I should just write about what I know....moving. And since "Gypsyhawk" was the song that got all this started, I wanted the lyrics to count for more than just some made up s***." Hearing is believing.
