(Warner Bros) The Resistance - the new album from British rock trio Muse - debuts at No. 1 on the Alternative, Rock, and Internet album charts, and No. 2 on the Overall Digital Album chart this week. In addition, Muse have scored their highest-ever U.S. debut on the Billboard album chart with the No. 3 bow of their fifth studio album, which sold 128,481 copies (the band's best-ever sales week) in its first seven days of release and No.1 on the top 200 Canadian albums chart. Muse's previous album, 2006's gold Black Holes and Revelations, peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard album chart.

The Resistance is also an international smash with 16 No. 1 debuts around the world, including Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, and the U.K., where the album sold close to 150,000 copies, making it the best-selling album by a UK artist this year.

The Resistance's impressive chart debut is due in part to Muse's stunning live appearance on the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on September 13th where the British rock trio performed their No. 1 Alternative Rock radio hit "Uprising." Another track from the album, "I Belong To You," has been confirmed for inclusion on the upcoming soundtrack to the motion picture New Moon.

"The Resistance is, by and large, a fantastic record, culminating in a three-song suite that finds the group jumping from classical movements to guitar fretwork to sweeping, swaggering, operatic rock," says Allmusic.com, while the Guardian writes: "there's something unrepentant in The Resistance's insane ambitiousness that demands respect."

The Resistance was produced by Muse and mixed by famed audio engineer Mark 'Spike' Stent. The band, which is vocalist/guitarist Matt Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dom Howard, will be special guests at select shows for U2, including two shows at Giants Stadium in New York, on September 23rd and 24th. The band have been nominated for two Q awards, which will be handed out in London on October 26th.

For the last few years, Muse have played to sell-out crowds throughout the U.S., Asia, Australia, and Europe. In the U.S., the band, who hail from the tiny town of Teignmouth in Devon, England, performed at the Lollapalooza Festival, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Las Vegas's Vegoose Festival, and KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas and sold out New York City's Madison Square Garden and The Forum in Los Angeles.
