Those Days by Matt York: The story behind this one is that I knew someone who for a long time (let's call him my uncle...) was seeing a girl and loved her to death. His only problem was that he never took it to the next level, never really told her how much he dug her and never made it official that she was the one he wanted to spend his life with. Because he never moved it along, she ended up leaving and I don't think he's ever recovered.
Recently a fan told me his story of marriage, divorce, marriage, kids and another divorce and this song goes out to people who had a lot going for them and then lost it for one reason or another. Hopefully, it'll help them figure out why things happen but give them some fire in the belly to do something about it.
This tune was written in a matter of hours in a tiny rehearsal space that I had in Toronto over the winter. It was one of those tunes that just came out of nowhere but was completed so quickly. I'd have to say it's one of my favourites for sure.
Recording this one was great. We had my dad come in (which is always a blast) with a few of his students to lay down all of the strings. My Dad's one of those musicians who can pick up anything and absolutely kill it. He's got perfect pitch and he's been playing violin for more than 50 years - definitely doesn't suck. When we first worked together on my last album I had to break him out of his classical shell a little bit which wasn't easy. We had a few blowups but in the end everything sounded amazing - a nice mix of his traditional style and my off-the-wall idea of musical theory ;-)
I love how this tune slams you in the face on the first chorus... the guys and I were in the studio and we'd play that first part over and over and every time we'd get a smile on our faces..... hope people dig it as much as we do.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
