Over the course of their 22-year career, Green Day have been nominated for 15 Grammy Awards, and have won three: Rock Album of the Year for their blockbuster 2004 album American Idiot, Record of the Year for the American Idiot single "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," and Best Alternative Music Performance for their Diamond-certified 1993 album Dookie.
Green Day is 2009's No. 1 artist at both Alternative and all Rock radio formats combined, including spins of current and recurrent catalog songs, according to Mediabase's Year to Date charts.
As of November 30th, Green Day has earned 195,905 spins at Alternative radio and 1,376,385 spins at all Rock formats combined. The top five Green Day tracks spun at Rock radio in 2009 are two singles from the 21st Century Breakdown: "Know Your Enemy" (75,907 spins) and "21 Guns," (51,666 spins), followed by "When I Come Around" (34,495 spins), "Brain Stew" (33,702 spins), and "Longview" (28,914 spins).
Green Day have also been nominated for a 2010 People's Choice Award for "Favorite Rock Band." In September, the band, which is singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool, took home three 2009 MTV Video Music Awards for "21" Guns," winning all three categories in which the clip was nominated: "Best Rock Video," "Best Cinematography," and "Best Direction." On November 5th, Green Day performed at the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin. The band was nominated for three awards, "Best Live Act," "Best Group," and "Best Rock," and took home the award for "Best Rock." They also won an American Music Award in November for Favorite Alternative Rock Music Artist.
