With his distinctive raw gravely voice and in-your-face honesty, the rocker's second album is sure to prove popular with fans looking forward to the follow-up to his debut album, Midnight Audio (2005).
Big brother to musician Gavin DeGraw, Joey has been playing music since the age of eight. He has recorded with noted producers, Steve Greenwell (Joss Stones' The Soul Sessions and Mind, Body & Soul) and Jim Caruana Beyonc's Crazy In Love). He has also collaborated with top recording artists, including Joss Stone, legendary Mountain front man/guitarist Leslie West, Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors, and of course, Gavin DeGraw. The new album, distributed via RED, is the first to be released on Joey's independent label, National Underground Records, which he recently started with his brother.
With Say Something Strong, Joey makes it clear that he will not be muzzled by the pressure to be politically correcttaking shots at everything from politics and record labels to societal pressures on women and relationships. He sees his mission for the album as a way to reignite his listeners' freedom of speech, which he says has been muted lately in our society. "No one can say how they truly feel anymore," says Joey. "People are too worried about offending others, so they stay silent." The opening track, "Waving at No One," takes a dig at politicians who manipulate others in their rise to power, while "Another Mistake," a song Joey originally wrote for Joss Stone, is more lyrically lighthearted, with a humorous cynical spin on relationships.
Since breaking out of the New York City underground music scene, Joey has been hard at work, both recording and touring around the country. He has packed the house at some of the city's most famous clubs, including the Bitter End and the Knitting Factory and has also taken the stage at The House of Blues (Los Angeles), Boston Garden, Harvard's YardFest and South By Southwest. Joey has toured both with his own band, and as a guitarist and singer in his younger brother Gavin's bandopening for acts Avril Lavigne, Switchfoot and The Wreckers.
Joey's music has been featured on the CW Network hit show "One Tree Hill."
