"Who Loves You Now" is about ghosts, but not in the ghoulish sense. I feel that I'm never really in a relationship with just one person. I'm with my current boyfriend and the ghosts of every other person I've been with because their influence lingers, shaping each new relationship. Actually the album cover for my band's debut album, "Capades", is based on this concept and song.
But it's not all that heavy. When I sing the line "who loves you now?", I'm directing this question at past boyfriends, asking it not in a jealous or prying way but more with a curious tone. Maybe I'm flirting a bit too. And I'm not concerned really with who's loving them so much as whether or not they're being loved at all.
And I suppose I'm a ghost too when I sing during the third verse, "We were full of it, we almost tied the knot -- Now I'm, just a peaceful afterthought". Once a person, now a thought and this is kind of what a ghost is, right?
I'm guilty of a few risqu things. One being a three-way in this song between current lover and the ghosts of two ex's --"But I'll dream of us while I'm kissing the ghost of him". This might seem confusing but I'm dreaming of one past relationship while picturing the memory of kissing someone else, all while I'm in an actual relationship. And earlier, in the second verse, my "dirty heart" was "touching" someone. Hey, give me a break it's just virtual debauchery.
The chorus is a little more obvious. It's about that giddiness you feel when you're gearing up for reckless, thoughtless love-abandon. And even when you're in that rapturous state, there's a part of you that dreams about "breathing" again about being free from love and overwhelming feelings. So, in other words, you're always dreaming about someone or something else always about the past or about the future.
