"The songs are a testament to Franklin and Fogarino's willingness to step away from their individual musical calling cards; there's no screeching distortion or three-guitar jams a la Swervedriver, and the music is considerable looser than Interpol's buttoned-up rock," exclaims Magnet.
While each has claimed its own stake in rock history, this is truly a full collaborative side-project for both. Whereas one might expect a mash-up of two distinct bands, what they create is something wholly singular, full of lilting, dream-pop soundscapes. With a self-titled, five-track EP [released on DH Records in April] already under their belts, the duo is slated to record their debut full-length album this August in Athens, Georgia.
"When we first worked together we had no real idea of what things would sound like or what direction it would take, but very quickly an overall sound and style aesthetic developed which I can't quite specify; but there's a kind of melancholic, reflective, walking-off-into-the-sunset side to it," explains Franklin. Stepping out from behind the drum kit, Magnetic Morning marks a true collaboration as Fogarino contributes melodies and chord progressions that Franklin then adds to. Fogarino explains: "For the both of us, working together is the opposite of our norms. Adam is usually the main songwriter for whatever he's involved with. And I don't contribute all that much to the melodic side of Interpol, only in the ways it's colored, treated, and effected. But in Magnetic Morning, I'm usually the one to bring forth a chord progression, or a melody that Adam will add to, musically, lyrically, and vocally."
Franklin and Fogarino plan to debut their new material on a fall U.S. tour this October and November. With nary a crewmember nor tour bus in site, these two seasoned musicians come to you armed with their instruments and their passion on their sleeves.
