(Reuters) Josh Groban's "Noel" ruled the pop album charts for a fifth week Thursday, a record for a Christmas release, while Mary J. Blige's new CD provided some stiff competition as overall sales surged in the holiday shopping frenzy.

Groban's "Noel" sold 757,000 copies in the week ended December 23, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It previously shared the Christmas record with Elvis Presley's 1957 "Elvis' Christmas Album," which spent four nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1.

Blige's "Growing Pains," the only debut to crack the top 10, landed at No. 2 with 629,000 copies - more on this story
