The hope is to collect as many DVDs and CDs as possible for the troops, largely relegated to inside activities because of the war zone's outside dangers. CDDVD Now! is accepting DVDs on behalf of Operation DVD and is looking for donations from video producers, studios, and individuals.
Phil Peretz, president of CDDVD Now! says "Regardless of one's personal or political views, it's a caring and nurturing gesture to support our young men and women who are in the military overseas and this is a great way to help them manage their downtime. We are asking all of our customers and neighbors to send us DVDs. These donated items will be collected every week or so before being shipped overseas. We're very excited to be a part of Operation DVD."
According to information from the Operation DVD website, the program started as a way to provide safe entertainment for American soldiers, whose outside recreation is limited by the dangers of snipers, mines and bombs.
DVDs are preferred over VHS tapes because they weigh less and are not as affected by the dust and heat of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Libraries of DVDs are being established at all bases, most of which have a reinforced recreation room equipped with a television and DVD player.
The goal is to ultimately have a selection of 200 to 250 titles in rotation at each base.
Movies up to and including an ``R'' rating are reportedly acceptable. Children's movies will be distributed to the children of families currently serving overseas.
