The lead single, "Ten Ton Brick," furthers Hurt's signature post-grunge alt-metal sound with a melodic melding of aggression and frustration with soaring harmonies, quieter interludes and intelligent, affecting lyrics. The Los Angeles-based quartet earned raves for their "gothic, confessional, soul-searching" songs and the ebb and flow of "heavy guitars, acoustic strums and symphonic samples, whispered vocals, and guttural screams." And those musical and lyrical qualities are even more intense on Vol. II.
Yet while Vol. II stands alone, it is connected to its predecessor: "If you look into our past with Vol. 1, you see how they also come together," explains drummer Evan Johns. Adds Loren: "Both records are like a collection of short stories. They often intertwine and cross-reference each other between the albums. Some of the songs were written 10 years ago, some this year, but our songs are often situational and about irony and age-old truths, so I return to themes that are important to me."
The track listing for Vol. II is as follows: 1. Summers Lost 2. Ten Ton Brick 3. Aftermath 4. Abuse of SID 5. Alone With The Sea 6. Talking To God 7. Loaded
8. Better 9. Assurance 10. On The Radio 11. Et Al 12. Thank You For Listening
