Doherty, the UKs entertainment and legal communities answer to Courtney Love, arrived early for court and reportedly sat on top of a car outside of the courthouse and played acoustic guitar for an attentive audience of reporters.
The judge chastised Doherty as he handed down the sentence. Youre a highly intelligent young man who appears to be very successful. You have experience of prison from a matter last yearyet in June from a holiday you brought back an offensive weapon, Judge Malcolm Ried told Doherty, according to NME.
There were a few tense moments for Doherty as the judge declared that he was not fit for community service and that he would have to serve four months behind bars. The judge then let Doherty off the hook, stated that because the weapon was found shortly after the troubled musicians had returned to the UK, that he was suspending the sentence for 12 months. Consider yourself fortunate, Judge Ried told Doherty.
Doherty was ordered to pay court costs and the judge ordered the knife destroyed.
Police found the knife on Doherty during a June 18th traffic stop in London. The weapon has been described as a flick knife with a 10cm blade. Police reportedly found it in Dohertys front pocket during the search.
