The Weinsteins formed a new company to purchase the rights to the film from Disney owned subsidiary Miramax, because Disney refused to release the politically charged film during an election year. The ink was barely dry on that deal before the Weinsteins secured this new distribution deal with Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. and IFC Films.
The Bush-bashing film won the top honor at the Cannes Film Festival last month and with a June 25th release date it is sure to spark some fireworks this Fourth of July in the United States with Moore supporters using it as fuel in their quest to unseat the President and Moore critics dissecting the film, to refute the claims made by Moore.
You can probably make a pretty safe bet
that the DVD and home video release of the film will be strategically planned
to occur close the election this November. October surprise? But will a
film help unseat a sitting president? Not likely, but stranger things have
happened in election years and if this election is as close as some pendants
predict, anything could tip the scales in either direction.
