The woman, Dawnette Knight, is reportedly under psychiatric examination after she swallowed barbiturates in a suicide attempt last week. Her attorney, Richard Herman, spoke with reporters on Friday and claimed, "Catherine Zeta-Jones has driven Dawnette Knight to attempt suicide and the real blood is on her hands.
Knight has been accused of sending several threatening letters to the actress. She has been charged with one felony count of stalking and 24 felony counts of making criminal threats. On Friday, Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg suspended the preliminary hearing for Knight, ordering the 32-year-old woman to undergo a psychiatric examination to determine if she is competent to stand trial.
The DAs office was quick to issue a statement
condemning the allegations by Knights attorney. "We are shocked and outraged
that the victim in this case, Catherine Zeta-Jones, is being portrayed
in this manner," said prosecutor Debra Archuleta. "We believe these statements
by defense counsel to be inappropriate."
